For more than 30 years, Ed McMahon was Johnny Carson’s television partner.

I use the word “partner” because “sidekick” and “second banana” fail to do McMahon’s role justice. The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson, and by extension Carson himself, were funnier and better because of Ed McMahon.
